About Our Practice
Whether your legal issue is civil or criminal, in the end your success depends on trial skills. Steve Shellist is a trial attorney at his core. With years of experience arguing before judges and juries in the courtroom, Steve Shellist is an aggressive, expert advocate. Mr. Shellist has often joked, “I’m not good at too many things. I can’t shoot a round of golf under 90. I can’t carry a tune. But I can try any case to a jury.”
The ability to persuade an audience to see your side of the story—and not your opponent’s—is an art. It’s what brings you leverage in a legal battle. And it’s what guarantees success in criminal and civil matters alike.
Whether you are seeking legal counsel over criminal allegations, corporate compliance, or civil causes of action, you will want an experienced trial attorney on your team.
Steve Shellist is a fierce trial attorney. After embarking upon a career in hotel management and starting his own business, Steve Shellist went to law school to pursue his passion for courtroom confrontation. After graduating from law school, he worked for the Harris County District Attorney’s office as a prosecutor. While prosecuting for the State, Steve Shellist worked his way up from misdemeanor to felony courts. He developed a reputation for his aggressive, confident trial strategy. Steve was known for his ability to take even the most harrowing of cases before the jury to secure their verdict.
Mr. Shellist tried over 65 jury trials as a Prosecutor, ranging from low-level misdemeanor crimes all the way to felony-level murders. He had a record of winning over 90% of those trials. Additionally, he reviewed and investigated thousands of cases on behalf of the State of Texas. Mr. Shellist left the office after his tenure as a Court Chief, where he was responsible for all case dispositions, as well as the supervision and training of the junior prosecutors that worked for him.
Due to his training and experience as a Prosecutor, combined with the relationships that he has forged with judges, prosecutors, court staff, and civil attorneys, Mr. Shellist has been able to achieve tremendous results for his clients.
To date, he has first-chaired over 150 jury trials in both state and federal courts. Mr. Shellist has access to an impressive network of lawyers in all disciplines, former law enforcement private investigators, and experts nationwide ready and able to assist him and his clients. He handles matters both in and outside of Texas.
Given his robust experience with criminal law, it was only a matter of time before Mr. Shellist decided to take his trial skills to new heights. Now, in addition to criminal law, The Shellist Law Firm applies its aggressive trial strategy and years of courtroom experience to the civil and corporate realms, as well.
In civil and corporate litigation, cases very rarely go to trial, and civil lawyers hardly ever get opportunities for extensive courtroom advocacy. The ability to carry any case to trial and confidently deliver a legal argument before a judge and jury is a skill that sets Steve Shellist apart in this field.
About Our Philosophy
At The Shellist Law Firm, we believe that every case is unique and requires its own creative and well-planned strategy. No two individuals or cases are alike. At our firm, we first like to meet with the clients to get to know them and their stories. Who they are, where they came from, and what they say happened: these are all important factors that need to be explored prior to mapping out a sound legal strategy.
Next, it is important to know as much about your opponent as possible. Spending on the front end to learn the propensities and weaknesses of your adversary is money well spent. In the words of Sun Tzu, know thine enemy! Mr. Shellist believes that he who knows the most about the facts and circumstances of a case will undoubtedly have the upper hand.
Finally, it is important to develop a strategy that is realistic, yet optimistic. If you are innocent of the crime you’ve been charged with, or if the Government’s case is riddled with doubt, then you deserve a dismissal. Likewise, if you’ve been hurt because of someone else’s negligence or wrongdoing, then you deserve to be compensated.
Too many attorneys tell their clients what they think the client wants to hear, and not what they need to hear. Clients are often extremely stressed when they come to visit us at our office. Whether they are facing serious criminal charges, or have been severely injured in an accident, clients are scared, depressed, and uncertain. At our firm, we believe that direct and accurate communication with the client is indispensable for the emotional health of the client.
The attorneys at The Shellist Law Firm are not afraid to fight if that’s what it takes to win your case. In law, you cannot force your opponent to give you the deal you want. You must either convince them that it is the right thing to do, or you must have the courage to let a jury decide your fate. And if you take your case to a jury, then it is imperative that you have an attorney that is battle-tested.
If you want to protect your legal rights, seek out an aggressive, skilled attorney with years of trial experience. If you want to know you are in good hands, seek out Steve Shellist.
